Our History
In 1975, BLACKALL RANGE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL opened at the old Kureelpa Hall with a handful of students, little equipment, no money and lots of enthusiasm. The following year, the school moved across the road to occupy the old one-room Kureelpa State School building set on a couple of acres of attractive rural land. By this stage, the school had received approval and funding from both the Commonwealth and State Schools Commissions.
Learning was originally carried out in a fairly free atmosphere based on child-centred activities. These days the teaching is more formalised and parent involvement continues to play a vital part in the successful running of the school. Over the years, the school has attracted families from all over the Sunshine Coast.
In 2015, the school celebrated its 40th anniversary and many past pupils and their families returned to the school for the occasion. Graduates of BRIS are known for their unusual degree of self-assurance, focus and direction, and achieving a high standard of academic performance. The philosophy and practices of Blackall Range Independent School have been well-documented in educational journals. The school represents an alternative to State and other non-government schools. It aims at equipping students with skills and understanding to bring about a more just and peaceful future.
By coming to this small community school, the children learn to take responsibility for their learning and at the same time gain a sense of what it means to be custodians of their environment. They become aware of themselves in a context where honest and open relationships are encouraged between children and adults. We are proud of our history and are excited to be involved in the evolution of our school!
